Transplanting tomatoes

Transplanting tomatoes

Question by Elizabeth R.

Hi Sarah, I live in Kinglake, Victoria and cannot rely on the weather at this time of the year. I have Tommy Toe and Apollo tomato seedings, 4cm high, and they are now in the greenhouse. Can I replant these seedlings into a slightly larger pot, then, when established, and the weather milder, plant them into a prepared bed?

Hi Elizabeth,

Spring is a fickle season, so you have the right idea. Transplanting into larger pots is a good strategy. I move mine on from that size twice before they finally get planted out. Moving to slightly bigger pots each time helps to develop stronger roots than just going from a small pot to a big pot. There is a saying in your area not to plant them out before the Melbourne Cup, but with the seasons all over the place these days you could get away with it a week or two earlier if your micro climate is warm and sheltered. But keep an eye out for frosts as they can come beyond this date and take everyone by surprise. All the best with your tomatoes – I hope you have an abundant harvest.

Cheers Sarah
