Thorny branches on a mandarin tree

Thorny branches on a mandarin tree

Question by Nicole L.

I have a dwarf mandarin tree and it is growing branches with large thorns on it. Is this normal? Should I cut the branches with the thorns off? They look different to the rest of the tree.

Hi Nicole,

It is quite common in many citrus trees that have been grafted, that branches sprout from the root stock. It is generally a thorny branch with smaller leaves. If left, it can grow more vigorously than the top section of the plant, the desirable fruiting part of the tree and can take over. The best thing to do is remove it with a clean and sharp pair of secateurs up close to the trunk without damaging the trunk. Your tree will then grow on to be a healthy mandarin tree and should give you a bountiful harvest. All the best with it.

Cheers Sarah
