- Repotting a Paintbrush Lily
Hi, I have numerous paintbrush bulbs in a pot and I was thinking of repotting them. One has a little flower but they do look overcrowded. Can I repot them now and if not, when should I? I live in N.S.W. and a stone's throw away from the Queensland border. Please help me.
Hi Rebecca,
I am assuming you are talking about Haemanthus, which is a stunning plant and goes under other names like blood lily. It would seem these plants like to be a little crowded and do better when their roots are restricted and so after dividing them, it can take a while (a few years) to flower again. Having said that you can divide them once they have gone dormant in the autumn/winter. Make sure to repot them immediately so they don’t dry out and check that they have good drainage. The general advice is to divide them every 4 – 6 years. I hope this is useful.
Cheers Sarah
