Dwarf bean plant leaves drying out

Dwarf bean plant leaves drying out

Question by Cassandra C.

I planted 4 dwarf bean plants from seeds. It's been three weeks and they were doing pretty well. Recently I've noticed that the tips of the leaves are drying out and curling inwards, or tearing at the edges. I have been watering these plants. About two days ago I gave the plants some diluted hydroponic fertilizer but the problem began before that. I also examined the leaves and couldn't see any pests. The climate where I am is subtropical humid. I would love to save my bean plants. Thank you!

Hi Cassandra,

I am making the assumption that they are seedlings that germinated three weeks ago and were doing well until now. I am also assuming you have them as seedlings in containers indoors, however some of these potential problems can affect plants outdoors as well. If you have checked that there are no pests then the remaining assumption is that the problem is environmental. Firstly, the problems with the leaves could be due to too much water – the soil only needs to stay evenly moist, so don’t let it dry out, but check before watering to avoid over watering. It could also be they are too cold for the variety of bean. Cold temperature can affect the leaves as you have described.

Not as likely in your location but if the air is too dry, this can also affect the leaves, and can be fixed by misting the plants or if they are in a pot, put the pot on a tray filled with gravel and keep this filled with water. This is also a great way to avoid over watering as the plant will only take up the water it needs. Or the final possible cause is your plants could be in a draught (or if outside have become wind burnt). If this is the case then move them or protect them from the breeze/wind, if possible. I hope all of this helps and your beans go on to recover and give you a fabulous harvest.

Cheers Sarah
