At the campfire - fresh potatoes out of the glow

Autumn is potato season. The delicious potato is healthy, full of nutrients and can be used for many different dishes. The main component of potatoes is water. Smaller parts are carbohydrates. Moreover, potatoes have important dietary fibres, vitamins, minerals and other ingredients which support a healthy diet.
Potatoes belong to the nightshade family and were imported from South America to Europe in the 16th century. However, having arrived in Europe, it took quite a long time till potatoes were well accepted and found their place as basic food.

So why not enjoy the colourful autumn with freshy grilled potatoes from the campfire? At the same time, you can get some warmth from the fire, for instance at a public fireplace or in your own garden using a fire altar.

When you prepare the potatoes for the fire, please consider that many nutrients are directly under the potato peel. So better stew or cook the potatoes with their peel so that they don’t lose these nutrients. If required, you can peel them afterwords. When steaming potatoes, the valuable minerals remains preserved.

Here are some tips on how to prepare potatoes for the campfire: After cleaning the potatoes, wrap them in aluminum foil and put them at the outer edge of the fireplace. The distance between the potatoes and the fire glow should be 10-20 cm.
Do not forget to turn the potatoes from time to time – otherwise they might get burned. After 1 to 1 ½ hours, the potatoes are done. For refining the potatoes you can offer a fresh yoghurt or sour cream dip with fresh herbs. Another idea is to grill bacon over the fire and then serve it with the stewed potatoes. Or just add butter and salt to the hot potatoes – it can be as simple as that. If the grilling time for the potatoes of more than one hour seems too long for you, it can be reduced by precooking the potatoes for approx. 15 minutes. The stewing time at the campfire will then be 15-20 minutes.
