What do you have to consider when planting tomatoes?

First of all, you need to choose an appropriate type from a nearly endless offer of variety. You can buy the tomato seedlings in garden centres or at the nursery of your confidence. Important criteria when selecting your prefered tomato type are the intended use and resistance to diseases and pests.
Then plant the seedlings at a sunny place with nutrient-rich soil. Almost all types of tomatoes require a climbing aid. Spiral rods around which the main shoots can wind themselves are ideal for this.

What happens to the side shoots?

In order to make your tomato plants produce more fruits, you should be growing the plants with one sprout only. This means that all other young shoots need to be broken off, as well as all other lateral shoots. In addition, the head of the plant can be cut above the fifth raceme. This way, the strength of the plant is directed to these five racemes, and the plant will finally yield a better harvest.

Watering tomatoes

Make sure that you always water the plant down at the soil and never pour water over the leaves. Otherwise the plant can be affected more easily by vermin. A well-proven trick of gardeners is to bury a clay pot right next to the tomato at soil level. When water is poured into or above that clay pot, it flows directly to the roots without wetting the leaves.
In general, you should never let the soil dry out completely but water regularly.

So good luck now with growing your own tomatoes in your garden! We wish you a rich harvest!
