Peppermint is the refreshment queen. The leaves are traditionally extremely popular in the Arab world. Here, they are particularly enjoyed as a tea - along with a good dose of sugar. If you fancy something cooler in the summer, this peppermint syrup recipe makes a wonderful alternative.

You probably already have the ingredients you need for this recipe at home:

  • 3 handfuls of peppermint
  • 3 lemons, sliced
  • 1 litre of boiling water
  • 1 kilogram of sugar

Preparing the peppermint syrup – how to do it

The syrup contains a decent amount of sugar, as you can tell from the list of ingredients. Remember, this is a syrup. It is not meant to be drunk neat. Dilute it with water according to taste or add it to other drinks or dishes. If stored in the fridge, the syrup will keep for a good three to four weeks, if not longer.

Preparing the peppermint syrup is simple: Wash the peppermint leaves and add them to a pan. Also add the slices of Lemon - they give the recipe an extra tangy taste. Then pour the boiling water over the ingredients. Make sure the peppermint leaves are completely covered by the water. Now you need to be patient. The mixture should be left to infuse in a cool place for three to four days. Then strain the leaves and lemon slices. All that is missing now to complete the syrup is the sweet ingredients: Let the concoction simmer together with the sugar for around 10 to 15 minutes, and voila - your refreshing peppermint essence is ready. Give this drink that extra wow factor by adding ice cubes, a piece of lemon or lime and a peppermint leaf for decoration.
