What is the maximum operational area for the GARDENA Robotic Lawnmowers?

We have created a range of robotic mowers to cover different garden types and sizes. Use the below shortlist to determine which robotic mower is suitable for your garden size.

Gardena R40Li can handle lawns up to 400m² +/- 20%, depending on complexity of the garden.

Gardena R70Li can handle lawns up to 700m² +/- 20%, depending on complexity of the garden.

Gardena R160 can handle lawns up to 1600m² +/- 20%, depending on complexity of the garden.

My garden is not totally flat, does the GARDENA Robotic Lawnmowers cope?

Gardena R40Li and R70Li manages inclines inside the working area up to 25%. At the perimeter wire the maximum allowed inclination is 10%.

The Gardena R160 model manages inclines inside the working area of up to 35%.

Will I still need an ordinary lawnmower?

No, normally you don’t need an ordinary lawnmower any more. In the event of uncut grass along the edges of your lawn, we recommend a trimmer to get a perfect finish for your lawn.

Can the GARDENA Robotic Lawnmowers handle all types of gardens?

With minor garden adjustment, in principle all types of gardens can be handled by the Gardena robotic mowers. Of course the garden must meet the product specifications when it comes to for example maximum inclination and narrow passages.

How do I know if this Robotic Lawnmower is suitable for my garden?

Simply check that your garden meets the product specifications. Use the below list to determine which Gardena robotic mower suits your garden.

Gardena R40Li:
• Lawn area size: maximum 400m2 +-20%
• Inclination inside the working area: maximum 25%
• Narrow passage: minimum 150 cm (wall to wall)

Gardena R70Li:
• Lawn area size: maximum 700m2 +-20%
• Inclination inside the working area: maximum 25%
• Narrow passage: minimum 120 cm (wall to wall)

Gardena R160:
• Lawn area size: maximum 1600m2 +-20%
• Inclination inside the working area: maximum 35%
• Narrow passage: minimum 130 cm (wall to wall)

How narrow are passages allowed to be in my garden?

This depends on which mower you have. Check the below specifications to determine which mower fits your needs:

Gardena R40Li: minimum 150 cm (wall-to-wall)
Gardena R70Li: minimum 120 cm (wall-to-wall)
Gardena R160: minimum 130 cm (wall-to-wall)

What is the maximum incline?

Gardena R40Li and R70Li manages inclines inside the working area up to 25%. At the perimeter wire the maximum allowed inclination is 10%.

The Gardena R160 model manages inclines inside the working area of up to 35%.

Will the GARDENA Robotic Lawnmower cope with my uneven lawn?

Due to the large driving wheels, the GARDENA Robotic Lawnmower can also cope with uneven surfaces. Sharp/deep holes should be avoided, for example by filling up the holes with soil to get an even surface in order to avoid unnecessary stops.

Can the GARDENA Robotic Lawnmower detect objects such as clothes or toys lying around on the lawn?

No. It is up to the owner to keep the lawn surface free from objects. Any object that is small enough for the robotic mowers to pass over may be damaged, as well as cause damage to the machine’s blades. Make sure your lawn is clear of small objects before operating the mower.

What about pine cones, tree branches and fruit on the ground?

To avoid unnecessary stop and maximize the life of the blades these types of objects should be raked or collected regularly. They will probably not damage the Robotic Lawnmower but reduce the performance.

I have a nice flower bed and trees that I want to protect. Is that possible?

Provided the wire has been installed correctly around your flower bed, tree, shrub, or other object, then the robotic mower cannot damage it or intrude into that area.

How does the GARDENA Robotic Lawnmower handle very long grass?

In normal operation a robotic lawnmower does not need to cut long grass since it continuously maintains a well-cut lawn. If the grass is very long and thick, at your first start-up, you should raise the cutting height and then gradually reduce it to the prefered level.

I have a lot of moss in my lawn – can the GARDENA Robotic Lawnmowers handle that?

Yes. In fact, the GARDENA Robotic Lawnmowers will reduce the moss. The continuous mowing has a very positive influence on grass growth leading to the gradual disappearance of moss from the lawn.

Will the GARDENA Robotic Lawnmower cut the grass in rainy conditions?

Yes. However it’s recommended that you bring the mower inside in extreme weather conditions, such as torrential rain and storms. If thunder storms are expected you should disconnect all wires to the charging station.

Will the GARDENA Robotic Lawnmower cut in very hot conditions?

The Robotic Lawnmower is designed to function in temperatures of up to about 45ºC.

If I want to use a GARDENA Robotic Lawnmower at my summer home or share it with my neighbour, can the mower work at two different locations?

Yes. However, depending on your model this procedure is different. In any case, you will need two charging stations and two loop wire installations.

For the Gardena R160:
R160 can simply be used in both locations. Once both charging stations have been syncronized to the robotic mower you can use it in both locations - simply start and stop.

For the Gardena R40Li & R70Li:
R40Li and R70Li can also be used in two charging stations but requires to be synchronized to the charging station each time it is moved from one location to antoher. See your operators manual for detailed information about this procedure. For most convenient use we recommend you to buy and install one mower each in the different locations.
