Fresh herbs taste of spring and are a key ingredient in all good food. Wouldn't it be great if you had a stock of your own herbs growing close at hand in your garden? The good news is that you don't need green fingers to grow herbs like rosemary, thyme, sage, mint, basil or evergreens parsley, chives and dill - they're all easy to grow in pots or the flowerbed. Herbs do best in a bright and sheltered position in fresh, nutrient-rich soil where they can develop their powerful aromas, and on sunny days give off an intensive fragrance at the lightest touch.
You don't have to create a full-blown kitchen garden though. A single flowerbed can already enrich the garden and your kitchen wants. A herb spiral is ideal for growing a lot of different herbs as it has space for a wide range of ideas to blossom. First, natural stone is placed to form a spiral-shaped drywall to a height in the middle of 80 centimetres. Now the heart of the spiral can be filled up with loose gravel, stones or potting soil to a height of around 50 centimetres. Plant your Mediterranean herbs around the top to receive more sun. Under these come your savoury, tarragon, basil and lemon balm and, at the base, where you could also place a small pond, thirsty herbs like mint and watercress.
Of course, you'll also need a few useful gardening tools and a bit of time to make sure your herbs flourish. Whether you choose from the GARDENA combisystem Hand Grubber to loosen the soil without damaging the herbs' roots, the GARDENA combisystem Hand Trowel to plant your seeds and seedlings, or GARDENA Secateurs to shape and prune your plants; they are all easy to use with specially designed handles for perfect ergonomics. By the way, herbs are most useful and fragrant just before they blossom.
